Over the years, we have witnessed the transformation of what was once a desert into a thriving vineyard oasis, driven by the discovery of pure glacial-fed water that made our viticultural dream a reality.

Our vineyards, perched upon an elevated plateau and planted across gentle northern slopes, bask in the warmth of the Central Otago sun. The Brassknocker soils, coupled with the pure glacial-fed waters that nourish our vines, bestow upon our wines a distinct sense of place—a true reflection of our terroir.

MATT CONNELL
Chief Winemaker
“Having the where-with-all and experience to make great Pinot Noir with great people in a great place with the love and support of my family enables the focus and energy to embark on this journey.”
Initially educated in Parks and Recreation management, Matt returned to university to complete a post-grad degree in Oenology and Viticulture in 2001.
Gaining experience around the world at Wynns of Coonawarra, Elk Cove Oregon, Peregrine, Olssens of Bannockburn and more recently 7 years as Winemaker and General Manager of Akarua.
The Vintages produced since arriving at McArthur Ridge Wines has earned Matt multiple accolades including winning New Zealand Red Wine of Show and Pinot Noir Trophy at IWC London as well as topping them all with Winemaker of Show at the NZIWS in 2021.
Since then, Central Otago has become Matt’s spiritual home.
MICHAEL HERRICK
Sales & Marketing Director
Michael’s focus returns to Central Otago, described as “God’s Country when it comes to Pinot Noir” by James Haliday, Panorama 2000, bringing with him a depth of skills and experience required to build successful premium global brands. “Creating an effective brand platform is exciting, however the real magic begins in implementing a plan that unites and invigorates the team with the shared vision, builds self-belief through success, while maintains a conviction for constant improvement throughout the journey.”
Michael Herrick graduated from University of Adelaide, Roseworthy, S.A. in 1993. Gaining experience globally with wine businesses in Australia, France, and London before returning to New Zealand to join the Montana Wines/ Pernod Ricard team. Then onward to Mt Difficulty Wines – Central Otago as team lead, Sales and Marketing, and more recently Trinity Hill Wines – Hawke’s Bay as Sales and Marketing Director.
Since arriving at McArthur Ridge Wines Michael has revitalised the McArthur Ridge brand portfolio, expanded domestic and export markets and most recently, extremely proud of helping earn McArthur Ridge “2023 Gold Award Winner” at the Australasian Pride In Print label Awards for our all-new The “McArthur” (Grand Cru) Alexandra Pinot Noir.
MURRAY PETRIE
Vineyard Manager
“The beauty of Central Otago is that it is forever changing scenes. It’s a privilege to be able to look after these lands.”
With a wealth of experience in vineyard management and a deep connection to the land, Murray’s journey with McArthur Ridge began at its inception and continues as he leads the charge as the Vineyard Manager. His expertise spans over two decades, honed through a diploma in viticulture from Otago Polytechnic.
Murray orchestrates the cultivation of grapes that embody the unique terroir of Central Otago. From organizing staffing to overseeing day-to-day operations, his astute leadership ensures the seamless execution of viticultural practices.
Beyond the vineyard, Murray actively serves as a volunteer firefighter, showcasing his commitment to both the industry and the local community. With his extensive industry knowledge and steadfast relationships, Murray plays a crucial role in shaping the legacy of excellence at McArthur Ridge.
